Understanding Glaucoma

Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, most often as a result of increased pressure from fluid that cannot drain properly. In some cases, cataracts may also contribute to this pressure. Without early detection and treatment, glaucoma can lead to irreversible vision loss.

Because glaucoma develops slowly and without noticeable symptoms, many people are unaware of the condition until significant vision changes occur. Early diagnosis and ongoing management are essential to preserving sight.

At Eye Physicians & Surgeons of Arizona, our fellowship-trained glaucoma specialists in Scottsdale and Glendale use advanced diagnostic imaging and precision treatment techniques to detect the disease early and protect your vision for years to come.

“Regardless of which physician you see, your care stays within one trusted team that knows your case inside and out.”

—Dr. Patel

Results-Based Glaucoma Care in Scottsdale and Glendale

At Eye Physicians & Surgeons of Arizona, our physicians combine clinical expertise with advanced data tracking to guide every treatment decision.

We use a proprietary outcomes analysis system that allows us to monitor results in real time and tailor care to each patient’s unique needs. You can ask any of our specialists to review the success rates of specific procedures or interventions.

Early Detection & Monitoring

Early detection allows our specialists to intervene before significant vision loss occurs. We use advanced imaging and diagnostic tools to detect glaucoma before symptoms appear:

  • Tonometry to measure eye pressure
  • OCT imaging to assess the optic nerve and retinal fiber layer
  • Visual field testing to detect early changes in peripheral vision
  • Gonioscopy to evaluate eye fluid drainage angles

Medical Management

For many patients, medical therapy is the first step in controlling intraocular pressure.

  • Prescription eye drops or oral medications tailored to disease type and stage
  • Careful monitoring to balance effectiveness and comfort
  • Ongoing support to manage side effects or treatment fatigue

Featured Innovation: The Nanodropper® — an FDA-approved adaptor that reduces eye drop size, extending bottle life, reducing waste, and minimizing irritation. Ask our team if this option is right for you.

Laser Treatments

Laser therapy offers an effective, minimally invasive way to reduce pressure and may lessen dependence on daily medications. Laser procedures are performed in-office and typically involve little to no recovery. We provide our patients access to all laser glaucoma treatment options, including in office.

  • Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT): Improves natural fluid drainage to lower eye pressure. SLT is considered the most effective first-line therapy for most patients.
  • Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI): Creates a small opening in the iris to prevent angle-closure.

Surgical Options

When medication or laser therapy aren’t sufficient, our surgeons offer the most advanced and comprehensive surgical treatments available in Arizona. Our goal is to preserve sight and improve quality of life using the least invasive, most effective approach for each patient.

We offer a full spectrum of glaucoma surgical options, including minimally invasive procedures such as trabecular bypass implants like iStent® and Hydrus®, Kahook Dual Blade® goniotomy, Omni canaloplasty, and the XEN® Microstent. When appropriate, we also perform traditional and combined surgeries, including trabeculectomy, tube and aqueous shunt procedures, cyclophotocoagulation, and cataract extraction with integrated glaucoma pressure control.

When cataracts contribute to elevated ocular pressure, our surgeons can combine cataract extraction with pressure-lowering treatment for optimal outcomes.

Advancing the Future of Glaucoma Care

Our specialists are advancing the field through research and new technology, offering patients early access to the latest diagnostic and surgical tools.

Radius XR™ System: Dr. Patel and Dr. Reiss are on the development team for the Radius XR™ System, the newest visual field machine that will improve the patient experience, reduce office overhead, and enhance the accuracy of detecting changes in the patient’s glaucoma progression.

Clinical Trials: Ongoing participation in national research on MIGS, gel stents, and novel medication delivery systems.
